History of the Growler

The name "Growler Rush" has its roots in the late 1800s when beer transportation was a common task. The name "growler" was first used in New York to describe a can filled with beer from a bar, and the act of transporting it was referred to as "rushing the growler". While other phrases such as "chase the duck" and "hurry the can" were used around the same time, "rush the growler" became the most widely used term.

The term "growler" came about because the flat cover over the container would lift and escape gas from the carbonated beer, making a growling noise as it was carried home. This resulted in a sort of burping action with gas from the carbonated beer lifting the cover and escaping – thus, the name "growler" stuck.
